Rooster illustration in golden colour.

Project Overview

In 2017, I was commissioned to create a Chinese New Year illustration for the Bund Financial Centre (BFC). Inspired by the building’s bold lines and verticality, the artwork reinterprets the Rooster through dynamic strokes and golden gradients, reflecting the architectural character while celebrating the festive spirit.

My role focused on illustration, translating the architectural aesthetic into a scalable design adaptable across hoardings, greeting cards, posters, and other brand assets.

Design Approach

Using Adobe Illustrator’s Blend Tool, I created a mesh of flowing lines shaped into the rooster, echoing the building’s form and elegance. The gradient of gold tones references BFC’s bronze architecture, ensuring the artwork felt both festive and aligned with the building’s identity. Adaptations across hoardings, greeting cards, and posters maintained the core style while incorporating subtle elements like the city skyline and colour variations to create visual depth and context.

Reflection

This project reinforced that context drives the strongest design. By letting BFC’s architecture guide the illustration, the artwork felt intrinsic to the space rather than simply seasonal decoration. It demonstrates how cultural motifs can be elevated through architectural and structural inspiration.
